Biography
Hi there spellers! My name is Erin Howard. I am a four-time morning finalist, three-time night finalist, and 2019 "octochamp" of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. New time slots are now open for the summer, so please contact me for more information!
As someone who has competed in spelling bees since the second grade, I know what it takes to succeed in competitive spelling. I am familiar with Scripps' apparent preferences and tendencies when assembling their competition word list (i.e. which languages of origin they use the most, what makes a good vocabulary word, etc). I have been an enthusiastic learner of roots, language patterns, and etymology for many years. I can acquaint you with dozens of languages of origin and their idiosyncrasies, and I can help you use your knowledge to decipher words you haven't seen. I would also be glad to offer advice about spelling resources and study methods or provide you with some of the topical and etymological lists I used during my own spelling career.
Some of my hobbies include playing the piano, trombone, and drum set, as well as composing music, reading, and writing. I have been involved with my school's cyber security team, Science Olympiad team, and academic team. I am an affable and dedicated person who enjoys helping others.
If you are a serious speller motivated to advance past your current level of competition, please consider becoming my student! I will do my best to work with you to help you achieve your goal.
