Bernadette Miao competed in spelling bees for two years. Her journey began with an impromptu classroom spelling bee in seventh grade. Her journey to Scripps began in eighth grade when her school enrolled in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the first time. To win her way to the national stage in 2015, Bernadette spelled soliloquy, crusade, and emancipation at three spelling competitions. She continues to participate in spelling as a coach and a judge. She has even started a few spelling bee clubs at schools and libraries. All proceeds from spelling tutoring sessions will go to start new spelling programs in local communities. In addition to spelling, Bernadette is an avid math student/tutor. Also, she holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has been playing the piano for eight years.
